The cost of making the virtual prototype (computer model) is similar to that of a physical 'rapid prototype'.

It is much easier and cheaper to make changes to the virtual prototype once it has been built, so that many scenarios can be rapidly examined and assessed before 'freezing' the design for a physical prototype or factory trial.
